Root canal surgery was scheduled Friday for Esita, a 7-year-old female Mexican gray wolf at a Boston zoo.

"We noticed she was having pain while eating and during her last physical they recommended the procedure," Melissa Grossenbacher, Zoo New England spokeswoman, told the Boston Herald.

It should be a simple procedure, according to Scott Giacoppo, spokesman for Angell Memorial Hospital.

"It's very similar to the dental procedure that a human gets," Giacoppo said. "We will have to anesthetize her and any time an animal or human is put under there is a risk, but we do hundreds of these every year."
