Champion Monessen tops this year’s Tri-County South Conference all-star team with 10 selections.

Heading the Greyhounds’ list is senior quarterback Chris Byrd, a three-time pick.

Byrd made the team the last two years as a flanker.

This season Byrd threw for eight touchdowns and ran for 10 scores.

Another Monessen repeater was senior fullback Shawn Martin, the team’s second leading rusher with 575 yards and top scorer with 62 points.

Rounding out the Monessen contingent were two-way senior linemen Anthony Argirakis, Keith Kadish, Justin Oliver and John Palmer, senior wide receiver-defensive back Brandon Jackson, senior linebacker-tight end William Sanders, junior running back-linebacker Brentt Jones and sophomore wide receiver-defensive back Robert Youngblood.

Joe Fischer, who guided the Greyhounds to a 10-1 record in his first season including a 14-6 loss to Roches-ter in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals, was named Coach of the Year.

California had seven players including two repeaters in 1,000-yard junior running back Ryan Robinson and senior quarterback Don Higinbotham.

Other Trojans picked were two-way senior linemen Mike Bongiorno and Andrew Mislo, senior fullback-defensive end Tom Hasbrouck, junior fullback-linebacker Calvin Kent and junior center-defensive end Nigel Wright.

Bentworth shows five players including senior quarterback Gary Puskarich, senior split end Nick Watson, junior running back Doug Dunn, junior guard-linebacker Jake McNary and sophomore flanker-defensive back Dom Wytovich.

Senior Chris Johnson, who made the team as a guard last year, is one of Frazier’s three representatives.

The other two Commodores are two-way junior tackle Mark Sweitzer and two-way sophomore back Craig Neely.

Mapletown followed Monessen with nine stars while Carmichaels had eight, Jefferson-Morgan and West Greene five apiece and Geibel two.

Other repeaters include Mapletown senior guard Justin Craig and senior running back Joe Kavlick

The annual Tri-County South Conference Banquet is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 28, at St. Spyridon in Monessen.
