With the Perry offense struggling through the air, the Commodores piled up 206 rushing yards to defeat Brashear, 34-13, on Friday night in City League play at Cupples Stadium.
Brashear had won five of the teams’ previous six meetings.
“It’s always a good win,” Perry coach Bill Gallagher said. “We were able to overcome some mental mistakes tonight. We came out flat in the first half, but we were able to make some adjustments at halftime.”
Tailback Chinelo Oparanozie carried 14 times for 100 yards, and quarterback Greg McGhee accounted for 230 yards of offense and contributed to four touchdowns.
“We just wanted to hit the holes hard and fast,” McGhee said. “We trust in our lineman, and they gave us great holes.”
Perry struck first: McGhee found receiver Eric Frye over the middle for a 56-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter.
Brashear (4-3, 4-2) tied the score in the second quarter on a Tre Gaines 3-yard run. On the first play of the second half, Brashear’s Jawanza Bryant took a handoff from Adam Lynch but fumbled at the 2-yard line, leading to a McGhee touchdown run.
“That was a huge play,” Gallagher said. “We pride ourselves on being an opportunistic defense, so when we do things like that, it’s huge.”
Brashear tied the score on its next possession, but it wouldn’t last. The Commodores put the game away with touchdowns on back-to-back drives, the latter coming on a 52-yard strike from McGhee to Frye.
Perry (7-1, 6-0) can clinch the No. 1 seed for the City League playoffs with a win against Westinghouse next week. McGhee said there’s no chance his team will pass up that opportunity.
“No,” he said. “We just want to use this time to get better at practice every day and win the City League.”
