Six Welsh prison guards were awarded $1.7 million in a compensation claim after finding a gruesome prison murder six years ago.

The Western Mail reports the officers were the first to arrive in convicted burglar Jason Ricketts' cell after he had killed and mutilated Colin Bloomfield.

The guards said Ricketts strangled Bloomfield, then cut out his liver, spleen and an eye, which were placed on a table next to the body.

Covered in blood, Ricketts said he was going to eat the heart.

Frank Rogers, the attorney for the Cardiff Prison guards, said the scene was like out of the 1991 thriller "The Silence of the Lambs."
