Unknown gunmen killed a prominent Colombian radio journalist Tuesday as he made his way to work, El Tiempo newspaper reported in its online edition.

Julio Hernando Palacios was reportedly shot in the stomach and head while driving to the radio station in Cucuta -- near the Colombia-Venezuelan border -- but he didn't die immediately.

Palacios survived a previous attempt on his life during the 1990s.

The radio personality was known to be an ardent supporter of conservative President Alvaro Uribe and often used his show as a platform to denounce government corruption.

Police suspect left-wing rebels may have been behind the killing. Uribe has spent his first two years in office cracking down on the Marxist rebels in the hope of putting an end to Colombia´s 40-year civil war.
