A Penn Hills man died in a local hospital Wednesday afternoon after being shot in the head outside a Garfield tavern.

Doctors at UPMC-Presbyterian in Oakland removed Craig Owens, 24, from life support about 2:30 p.m., the Allegheny County Coroner’s office and Pittsburgh police said.

Owens got into an argument about 12:50 a.m. with unknown people inside the Horoscope Lounge on the 5400 block of Penn Avenue, police Lt. Thomas Stangrecki said. Several people including the victim left the bar.

But a few minutes later, more than a dozen gunshots were fired on the sidewalk and street outside, Stangrecki said. Police found Owens lying in front a bullet-riddled Jeep Cherokee parked across the street.

Owens was a full-time student at Triangle Technical School, police said. He was at the bar with several friends and family members.

Police were still interviewing family and witnesses to the shooting last night. Stangrecki said the motive for the fight and shooting were unknown.
