U.N. peacekeepers and Haitian police traded fire with supporters of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide leaving one dead, Haitian radio reported Friday.

Thursday's raid of a pro-Aristide slum known as Bel Air erupted into violence, according to witnesses, when U.N. troops and Haitian police entered, firing on residents and killing a 24-year-old man.

The shoot-out follows a protest this week that left five people dead.

According to police, officers opened fire Wednesday after they heard shots coming from a protest calling for the return of Aristide, who left the country in February 2004 amid pressure from armed rebel groups.

Despite efforts by the 7,500-strong U.N. peacekeeping force and Haitian police, violence has continued in the embattled Caribbean nation, claiming hundreds of lives since Aristide's departure.
