Half of Boyce Park remains undeveloped
Plum Mayor Rich Hrivnak is looking for a few good ideas.
Hrivnak has been appointed to the Friends of the Parks — a group that advises the county Parks and Recreation Commission.
And Hrivnak wants to take some ideas to the commission on how to better utilize the 1,096 acres of Boyce Park, which primarily is located in Plum. A small portion of the park is in Monroeville.
“We have a great facility with a ski resort and a wave pool,” Hrivnak said during a council meeting last month. “And most of it is in Plum. Any resident who is interested in becoming involved in what types of things they would like to see at Boyce Park, let me know.”
Boyce Park was the first of the regional parks to be dedicated in 1963. About half the park is undeveloped.
Plum officials have seen ideas become reality at Boyce Park in the past.
Councilman Steve “Skip” Taylor and former Councilman Dave Vento, both past members of the Friends of the Parks, in 2003 spearheaded the development of a skate park at the site of the former tennis courts near the wave pool.
The 15,000-square-foot “3B action Park” — for boarders, bikes and blades — was completed in 2006 and includes features such as a quarter pipe, concrete bowls and an in-line skating area.
The cost was $768,000 with 65 percent of the funding coming from the county’s 1 percent Regional Asset District sales tax. Additional funding was provided by the state Department of Community and Natural Resources, the Allegheny County Health Department and the county’s capital budget.
Allegheny County sought out teens for input on the design of the park.
Taylor said youngsters who use the 3B park are looking for a track for BMX racing.
Hrivnak said the park’s focal point is the ski resort. The mayor said a BMX track and a bike trail are “on the table already,” or under consideration.
Hrivnak said county officials are considering outdoor concerts at Boyce Park.
