Blood drives

American Red Cross blood drives will be conducted as follows:

  • 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday, Garden City United Methodist Church, 500 Laurel Drive, Monroeville.

  • Noon-6 p.m. Dec. 9, Brownsville First Christian Church, 512 Second St.

  • 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Dec. 10, Waynesburg Central High School auditorium.

  • noon-6 p.m. Dec. 10, Uniontown Fireman's Social Hall, Dunbar Street.

  • noon-6 p.m. Dec. 11, Leechburg Elks Club, 228 Market St.

  • 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Dec. 11, Frazier High School, Perryopolis.

    Classes

    A seminar on "The Aging Brain, The Rejuvenated Brain" will be presented 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Holiday Inn North Hills, 4859 McKnight Road, Pittsburgh, and Jan. 9 at Blair County Convention Center, Altoona.

  • UPMC McKeesport will hold a state-approved preparation class for nursing assistants weekdays 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Jan. 9-29. Admission requirements include high school diploma or GED, physical exam and tuberculosis test, personal references and interview, and a Criminal History Information Report (Act 14).

    Latrobe Area Hospital will debut a new outpatient rehabilitation center in Norvelt with an open house 3-6 p.m. Dec. 10. Refreshments and tours will be available.

    Located in the Hurst Professional Building along Route 981, the center offers outpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language therapy. A gym features the equipment necessary to help people grow stronger, healthier and more capable after an illness or injury.

    With the addition of Norvelt, Latrobe Area Hospital now provides outpatient services in four convenient locations including Latrobe, Blairsville and Mountain View, where Incwell, the hospital's occupational health service, is located.

    The Norvelt office will be open 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays, with evening and Saturday hours as demand dictates.

  • Westmoreland Hospice will light up its Hospice Holiday Memory Tree at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Four Points Hotel by Sheraton, Hempfield Township, with a public ceremony. For the 14th year, the tree features dove silhouette ornaments, the international hospice symbol, made by family members of former hospice patients.

    The tree will be displayed as part of the Parade of Trees in the hotel's main lobby through Jan. 4.

    Hospice is a program of support and care for people with terminal illness who choose to be at home. For information about the program or placing a name on the tree, call volunteer coordinator Joan Roth at 724-689-1153.
