I disagree with Eric Rosenquist, writer of the letter “Conservatives should conserve” (May 5 and TribLIVE.com), on several points.
Defined for the beginner, “conservation” relates to the protection of animals, plants and natural resources. “Conservative” relates to a philosophy of conservatism. The two words are not related and not synonyms, but just have some of the same letters of the alphabet.
Democracy is not guaranteed by the Constitution, as we are not a democracy. If one can recite the Pledge of Allegiance, then one will know the answer (or for those who cannot: “and to the republic for which it stands”).
Because “conservative” and “conserve” are of no relation, the whole point of Rosenquist's letter is moot. As my husband would say, words mean things, and this is a perfect example of that.
