Head-on collision kills two on Route 66 near Leechburg

Police continue to investigate a fiery, head-on collision that killed two men early Saturday north of Leechburg and sent two other victims to the hospital.

Saying he didn't want to jeopardize the investigation, township police Chief Dan Clark refused to release accident details, including the names of those involved.

According to a written statement from Armstrong County Coroner Bob Bower, the men who died were 47 years old and 33 years old. They were traveling south on Route 66 toward Leechburg, just north of Schenley Road, at about 2:20 a.m. when a northbound vehicle carrying two people struck theirs head-on.

The vehicle the men were driving, reportedly a SUV, in burst into flames upon impact, according to Bower. The men couldn't escape, suffered "100 percent thermal burns" and were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Bower.

The passengers in the other vehicle, a male and a female of unknown ages, were taken to a Pittsburgh hospital, according to Bower. He said it appears as if their vehicle drifted into the oncoming lane.

Bower didn't identify the hospital to which the survivors were. Clark also would not comment on the hospital to which the victims were flown.
