Alzheimer’s Walk needs teams The Clarion/Jefferson Counties Memory Walk Committee for the Alzheimer’s Association needs teams to take part in the 2005 Memory Walk on Saturday at the Clarion University Stadium. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. All funds raised from the memory walk are used to support, educate and improve the lives of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. Group holds Annual Banquet For Life Crossroads Pregnancy Services (formerly Monroeville Pregnancy Care Center) will host its Annual Banquet For Life fundraiser at the Monroeville Radisson Hotel on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. The banquet will celebrate Crossroads’ recent transition to a licensed medical center that is able to provide limited medical services to its clients. The evening’s keynote speaker will be Thomas A. Glessner, J.D., founder and president of the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates – a public interest law firm representing more than 900 pregnancy centers in 48 states. The former president and CEO of CareNet, Mr. Glessner also founded and led four pregnancy centers. Tickets to the event are free, but must be requested in advance. One of the most popular presentations is Staying Fit to Stay Healthy, which includes a 15-minute sit-down aerobic session. The presentations are free and can be organized in one day at the time and location of the community group’s choice. All presentations include handouts; some offer audiovisual aids. HAVIN schedules training session HAVIN, a domestic violence and sexual assault center is seeking caring, dedicated individuals to volunteer in its shelter, on its hotline and a multitude of other areas. HAVIN was begun by volunteers and continues to depend on dedicated volunteers. The next 60 hour training session begins Oct. 5. Classes will meet Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon. Fred McIlhattan (R-Clarion/Armstrong) has announced a local meeting to inform residents about the federal Medicare prescription drug benefit. McIlhattan said the meetings are led by volunteers from the Pennsylvania De-partment of Aging’s APPRISE Program, which offers health insurance counseling to Medicare beneficiaries. One remaining session will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 28 at the Leechburg Senior Center, Kepple Hill, Parks Township fire hall, Vandergrift. The local Medicare meeting schedule can be viewed on the Department of Aging’s Web site at www.aging.state.pa.us. Grief support group to meet “Weathering Grief” an on going monthly grief support group is held every third Tuesday of the month from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Armstrong County Health Center, 265 S. McKean St., Kittanning. The next meeting is Sept. 20. These meetings are open to the community for anyone who has lost a loved one and are sponsored by the VNA Hospice, Western Pennsylvania and there is no fee. Association for Blind has office There is a new office for the Armstrong County Satellite of the Butler County Association for the Blind at 318 Market St., Kittanning.
