BLOOD DRIVES The Westmoreland County Chapter of the American Red Cross is conducting the following blood drives: – noon-6 p.m. Tuesday, Hempfield Municipal Building, Route 136. – 1-7 p.m. Tuesday, Mt. SEMINARS UPMC Health System Stroke Institute is presenting a daylong seminar for doctors and medical professionals, ‘Stroke Update 2001,’ on Friday at the Westin Convention Center, 1000 Penn Ave., Pittsburgh. FUND-RAISERS Star chefs from several local restaurants will be preparing their specialties at a gourmet auction to benefit the March of Dimes on Oct. 15 at the Four Points Hotel by Sheraton, Hempfield Township. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with a grand buffet tasting featuring the chefs’ signature dishes. Following recognition of the chefs at 7:45, there will be a live and silent auction of special items and packages. Reservations are $35 per person; corporate tables are available for $280. Employees of participating businesses can purchase a ‘Blue Jeans for Babies’ button at their workplace for a $5 donation to the March of Dimes. This entitles them to wear blue jeans or casual attire to work on a designated day during the week of Oct. 29 through Nov. 2. In addition, participants will receive coupons to use at area restaurants and be entered in a grand prize drawing. Companies are also eligible for incentives. The University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute is holding its ninth annual Leadership Dinner at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 at the Westin Convention Center, downtown Pittsburgh. The event raises funds for cancer research and honors cancer survivors and others for their efforts to increase public awareness about cancer. Honorees at this year’s dinner include U.S. Rep. John Murtha, a Johnstown Democrat; Dan Rooney, president of the Pittsburgh Steelers; David Roderick, former chairman and chief executive officer of USX Corp.; Rosey Grier, former football player; and Larry Lucchino, president and chief executive officer of the San Diego Padres. SCREENINGS Abdominal aortic aneurysm, stroke, peripheral vascular disease and osteoporosis screenings will be conducted on Oct. 18 at the Ligonier YMCA. Each test costs $40. FLU CLINICS A flu shot clinic for Westmoreland County residents ages 65 and older (or those with a chronic medical disease) will be held 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Oct. 23 at the Town House in North Huntingdon Township. There is a $12 charge for those not covered by Medicare or Security Blue. Participants need to bring identification, proof of residency and insurance cards. CLASSES/WORKSHOPS The 38th annual meeting of the Mental Health Association in Westmoreland County will be held on Oct. 29 at Mountain View Inn, Route 30, east of Greensburg. Workshop sessions begin at 2 p.m. Topics to be covered are: ‘Common Childhood Mental Disorders’; ‘Mental Health and Trauma’; ‘Stress Management for Stress Managers’; ‘Balanced and Restorative Justice’; ‘How to Talk About Depression, Anxiety and Suicide’; and ‘Westmoreland County Behavioral Health System Overview.’ Keynote speaker for the event is Rosanne Schmeling, owner of RoRganizer.
