Classes/programs

  • Assistance in filing insurance claims and understanding medical bills and Medicare will be provided by these insurers at Excela Health locations:

  • Excela Health will offer these prepared childbirth sessions covering labor and birth, pain control options, caesarean birth, postpartum care, the normal newborn and breathing/relaxation techniques:

    -- Five-week Wednesday series begins 7-9:30 p.m. Aug. 3, Memorial Conference Center, Westmoreland Regional Hospital.

    -- Four-week Monday series begins 7-9 p.m. Aug 15, Alex G. McKenna Education Center, Latrobe Area Hospital.

    -- Weekend series, 6-9 p.m. Aug 12 and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 13, Alex G. McKenna Education Center, Latrobe Area Hospital; or 10 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Aug. 20-21, Memorial Conference Center, Westmoreland Regional Hospital.

  • "Do I qualify for home health care?" will be the topic of a free program 10 a.m. Aug. 3 at Tara Hospital at Brownsville. Patients and family members can learn who is eligible to receive Medicare-covered home health care, how long Medicare coverage will last, what services Medicare pays for and who qualifies for the program.   • "Staying Healthy With Diabetes," a self-management education class for those with the disease, will meet weekly for one month beginning 1-3:30 p.m. Aug. 4 at Tara Hospital at Brownsville. Registration is required; call 724-785-1887 or 724-785-1978.

  • The "how-to's" of breast-feeding, including common problems and challenges, will be addressed in a Breastfeeding Basics class 6:30-8:30 p.m. Aug. 4 in conference room A, Excela Health Westmoreland Regional Hospital. Information: 877-771-1234.

  • "Facts of Life" for girls ages 9-12 and their parents or guardians will be offered 6-8 p.m. Aug. 5 in the Alex G. McKenna Education Center, Excela Health Latrobe Area Hospital. Registration is required; call Education Services, 724-537-1755.

  • Managing congestive heart failure is the topic of a class scheduled 2-3 p.m. Aug. 9 in the Cardiac Services conference room, Excela Health Latrobe Area Hospital.     Contests

    People with epilepsy may enter original artwork in the fourth annual Expressions of Courage art contest, sponsored by the Epilepsy Foundation and Ortho-McNeil Neurologics Inc. Works should reflect the artist's perspective on living with epilepsy, a neurological condition that affects 2.7 million Americans. Sunday is the deadline for entries.     Screenings

    Free health screenings will be offered 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Wal-Mart, 1450 Morrell Ave., Connellsville. Glucose screenings for diabetes and bone density screenings for osteoporosis will be available. Registration is not required; a free Bayer Contour glucose meter will be provided with the purchase of Ascensia test strips.

    Support groups

    A support group for family members of children with autism will meet 6:30 p.m. today at Playtime Care Center, 10621 Barnes Lake Road, North Huntingdon Township. A social skills/play group for children with autism spectrum disorder and their siblings will be held at the same time. Registration for the play group is required; reservations for parents are preferred, but walk-ins may attend.   • Grief and loss are the focus of these Excela Health programs:

    -- Pregnancy loss support group for parents who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth or ectopic pregnancy, 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 1 and 18 at St. Joseph Center, Route 30, east of Greensburg.

    -- Help to Heal, a program with an art therapy component for adults and children who have experienced the death of a loved one, 6-7:30 p.m. Aug. 2 and 16, Alex G. McKenna Education Center, Latrobe Area Hospital.

    -- Compassionate Friends, for families who have experienced the death of a child, 7-9 p.m. Aug. 8, boardroom, Frick Hospital; and 7:30-9 p.m. Aug. 9, Harrold Zion Lutheran Church, Hempfield Township.

    -- Breast cancer diagnosis and recovery, 6:30-8 p.m. Aug. 2, conference room D.

    -- Alzheimer's disease and other memory impairments, 7-9 p.m. Aug. 2, conference room C.

    -- Fibromyalgia, 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 3, conference room D; offers emotional coping, pain and fatigue management strategies.

  • A support group for breast-feeding mothers and their babies will meet 5:30-6:30 p.m. Aug. 3 and 17 in the prenatal clinic at Excela Health Latrobe Area Hospital. Information: 724-537-1755.

  • Individuals who are providing home-based care for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease or other dementia may attend a free seminar 5:30-7 p.m. Aug. 9 at The Mercy Hospital: North Shore Campus, 1004 Arch St., on Pittsburgh's North Side. Speaker will be Ann Donohue, a registered nurse with Celtic Healthcare, a licensed home health agency. Participants also may enroll in the Alzheimer's Association Safe Return program, a free service that provides assistance when a person with dementia wanders or becomes lost. Registered caregivers will be given identification materials including wallet cards, jewelry and clothing labels, as well as inclusion in a national database of photos and information that can be activated to help find the missing person.

    Volunteer opportunities

    The American Red Cross Westmoreland County Chapter is seeking volunteers to help with blood drives and work as office support staff and Armed Forces emergency service responders.
