In a short meeting on Tuesday night, Ligonier Township supervisors set two public hearings for conditional-use applications this month.

At 7 p.m. Aug. 30, residents will have the opportunity to comment on an amended conditional-use application filed by Bethlen Communities to add a seventh office to its Heritage Center.

The senior-care living facility received prior approval for six offices but needs approval to add one more.

Last month, township planning commissioners recommended that supervisors approve the request, citing Bethlen's new water line that provides adequate water pressure in case of a fire in the Heritage Center.

Additionally, at 7:30 that evening, Coal Loaders owner Donald Lupyan will present a plan for a 38-acre mine reclamation project on the backside of property owned by Ligonier Camp and Conference Center.

According to the application, the project is expected to be completed by fall, and the work would include eliminating hazardous areas, backfilling the former 1940s strip mine and revegetating the site.

Planning commissioners also recommended supervisors approve the project, based on the proposed hours of operation of 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, with no mining on Sundays.
