A Hempfield Township man was taken into custody after a brief standoff with police early Friday morning.

State police at Greensburg said Robert R. German chased his wife throughout their residence along State Route 3075, threatening to kill her with a .45-caliber semiautomatic assault rifle. Police said the victim managed to hide in the basement-garage area while reaching a Westmoreland County 911 dispatcher on her cell phone.

German was charged with simple assault, reckless endangerment, terroristic threats, resisting arrest and harassment, state police said.
