The Fox Chapel hockey team went up against Quaker Valley on Feb. 29 in a PIHL Class AA preliminary-round game. The Foxes entered the game as the No. 5 seed while the Quakers were seeded fourth.
Quaker Valley's Ryan Quinn scored the eventual game-winner in the third period to help his team claim a 6-4 win. The Foxes, who ended up with a 12-11 record, got a pair of goals each from Ben Friedland and Jonathan Rice. Jasper Uricchio had a pair of assists, and Chad Veltri made 29 saves in goal.
“I knew it was going to be a competitive game,” FC coach Rick Villani said. “My seniors played their hearts out but, unfortunately, we came up with a loss. That's how hockey goes sometimes.
“I felt we had a great season, and I really enjoyed it. It was an honor to coach this team.”
The seniors who played their last game for the Foxes were Veltri, Friedland, Uricchio, Rice, Michael Hudic, Mikke Kakela, Dan Uselman, Nathanael Condron and Adam Rosenberg.
“I believe that what the seniors gave the team is their ethic of hard work and competitiveness so that hopefully, next year, our players can carry that on,” Villani said. “These seniors have helped build a solid foundation, and they will expect that the returning players maintain what has become a solid program.”
Wrestling
The WPIAL Class AAA Southwest Regional wrestling tournament was held at Penn Hills High School on Friday and Saturday. Fox Chapel had a pair of wrestlers reach the quarterfinals. Zach Carcy fell to Upper St. Clair's Eli Grape, 7-4, at 195 pounds, and Jared Pegher lost by fall to Brendan Furman of Canon-McMillan at 285.
Carcy rebounded to reach the third-place consolation match Saturday. He dropped a 9-3 decision to Francis Duggan of North Allegheny but still qualified for the PIAA championships at the Giant Center in Hershey this weekend.
FC's Mike Mahon also wrestled his way back into contention and went up against Colin McCracken of Waynesburg in the third-place match at 182. Mahon lost 5-1 but qualified for the trip to Hershey.
