A California high school's production of "Bat Boy: The Musical" has some parents chafing over its references to incest, rape, bestiality and murder.

"Bat Boy," an off-Broadway hit, is about the alienation and bigotry a half-human mutant endures as he tries to assimilate. In recent weeks, the drama teacher and principal at La Canada High have held several meeting with parents in the community just west of Pasadena to assure them the script had been adapted to be suitable for students, the Los Angeles Times said Thursday.

"Obviously, you are not going to have a rape scene in the middle of a high school play," said Principal Michael Leininger.

Brian Flemming, who wrote the musical with Keythe Farley, thanked the board for supporting the drama department's decision to stage the play on his Web site.

The students are in rehearsals now with an eye to opening night June 1.
