High school roundup: Late TD propels No. 9 Hampton past No. 8 Montour
Ross Andersson delivered a 4-yard touchdown pass to Clayton Kejas with 6:49 left to lead No. 9 Hampton to a 19-14 victory over No. 8 Montour in a WPIAL Class AAA first-round game Friday night.
Alex Bianco and Andrew Siford each ran for a score for the Talbots (6-3). Randall Labrie led No. 8 Montour (6-3) with 115 yards passing and one touchdown.
Belle Vernon 36, Chartiers Valley 7 — Derek Verkleeren returned a kickoff 77 yards for a score and also caught a 5-yard touchdown pass to help No. 2 Belle Vernon (9-0) to a WPIAL Class AAA first-round victory. Mike Semancik had an interception and collected three sacks in the win. Jake Collins led No. 15 CV (4-5) with 119 yards rushing and 218 passing.
Central Valley 59, Laurel Highlands 14 — Chris Callaghan threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns to power No. 1 Central Valley (8-1) to a Class AAA first-round win. Aris Tatalovich caught three passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns in the victory. Kurt Reinstadtler caught a 60-yard pass for a touchdown and returned an interception 32 yards for another for the Warriors. Kyle Vreen chipped in 112 yards and two scores on the ground.
Franklin Regional 49, West Mifflin 7 — Santino Birty passed for 148 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 125 yards and three more scores to lead No. 7 Franklin Regional (7-2) to a WPIAL Class AAA first-round victory over No. 10 West Mifflin (6-4). Jacob Ross and Stephen Johns each rushed for a touchdown for the Panthers.
Mars 17, New Castle 14 — Caleb Brake booted a 19-yard field goal as time expired to give No. 4 Mars (8-1) the WPIAL Class AAA first-round victory. Isaiah Johnson finished with 141 yards on 27 carries and had one rushing touchdown for the Fighting Planets.
Ringgold 35, Ambridge 0 — Brendan Small ran for 126 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries to propel No. 5 Ringgold (8-1) to a Class AAA first-round victory over No. 12 Ambridge (5-5). Chacar Berry had 120 yards rushing and a score.
West Allegheny 28, Hollidaysburg 8 — Terence Stephens broke a scoreless tie in the third quarter with a 74-yard touchdown run, then scored again in the third quarter from 15 yards out to propel No. 3 West Allegheny (7-2) to a first-round win.
Bethel Park 34, Kiski Area 26 — Levi Metheny tossed four touchdown passes and threw for 134 yards to help No. 8 Bethel Park (6-3) quell a late rally from No. 9 Kiski Area (5-4) and secure the WPIAL Class AAAA first-round victory. Charlie Davis had three receiving touchdowns, and Terron Murphy ran for 154 yards for the Black Hawks. Chad Kuhn threw for 173 yards and two scores for the Cavaliers.
Mt. Lebanon 42, Plum 21 — David Harvey scored on touchdown runs of 24 and 2 yards and caught another for 35 yards, and Eddie Jenkins threw for 139 yards and two scores and added 124 yards on the ground, as No. 6 Mt. Lebanon (9-1) downed No. 11 Plum (6-4) in a WPIAL Class AAAA first-round game. Kevin Brown returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and added a 71-yard touchdown run. He finished with 113 yards on seven carries.
North Allegheny 56, Norwin 17 — Ijhad Bonner had touchdown runs of 9 and 51 yards in the first half to help No. 4 North Allegheny (8-1) secure the WPIAL Class AAAA first-round playoff victory. Nick Provenzano had two touchdown runs for the Tigers. Kyle Turcovsky ran for 158 yards and one touchdown, and teammate Nick Amendola collected 117 yards on the ground for No. 13 Norwin (5-4).
Penn-Trafford 56, North Hills 7 — Penn-Trafford quarterback Brett Laffoon tossed five touchdown passes, four to Tim Vecchio, and the No. 2 Warriors finally got a win against North Hills in the opening round of the WPIAL Quad-A playoffs.
Penn-Trafford (10-0) was 0-12 against No. 15 North Hills (3-7) before Friday night.
Pine-Richland 42, Penn Hills 7 — Jimmy Graf racked up 172 yards and two rushing touchdowns on 19 carries to propel No. 3 Pine-Richland (8-1) to the WPIAL Class AAAA first-round win over No. 13 Penn Hills (3-7). Phil Jurkovec threw for 257 yards and two scores on 17 of 27 passing.
Woodland Hills 41, Hempfield 7 — Miles Sanders had two carries, one for a 76-yard touchdown run and the other for a 45-yard touchdown run to help No. 1 Woodland Hills (9-0) secure a WPIAL first-round victory over No. 16 Hempfield (3-7). Jaymond Dunn returned a punt 64 yards for a score and caught a 15-yard touchdown pass in the win. Jo-El Shaw caught a touchdown pass and Jayquan Smith scored on a 1-yard run.
Aliquippa 42, Keystone Oaks 26 — With quarterback Sheldon Jeter accounting for four touchdowns and running back Kaezon Pugh running for two more, No. 2 Aliquippa (10-0) defeated Keystone Oaks (5-5) in a first-round matchup.
Beaver 45, Mt. Pleasant 24 — Darius Wise threw for 110 yards and a touchdown and ran for 130 yards and four scores to help No. 9 Beaver (7-2) to a WPIAL Class AA first-round win. Wise also returned a kick 85 yards for a score. Chris Wagner ran for 134 yards and a score for No. 9 Mt. Pleasant (7-2).
Beaver Falls 33, Apollo-Ridge 29 — Derrell Carter’s 4-yard touchdown with 3.5 seconds remaining gave No. 4 Beaver Falls a come-from-behind victory over No. 13 Apollo-Ridge in a Class AA first-round thriller at Geneva College’s Reeves Field. Carter finished with 182 yards rushing and two fourth-quarter touchdowns for the Tigers (9-1), while quarterback Malik Shepherd rushed for 213 yards and a score. Duane Brown ran for 199 yards and two TDs for Apollo-Ridge (6-4).
Freeport 45, McGuffey 6 — The Yellowjackets (9-1) closed down James Swartz Stadium in a big way, soaring past the Highlanders (6-4) in the Class AA first round. Ryan Weigold was 22 of 24 passing for 353 yards and five touchdowns, setting a new single-season school record with 1,983 yards.
South Fayette 63, Burgettstown 6 — Drew Saxton threw for 184 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 1 South Fayette (10-0) to a WPIAL Class AA first-round win over No. 16 Burgettstown (5-5). Hunter Hayes and Dan Trimbur each added two touchdown runs for the Lions.
Steel Valley 49, New Brighton 7 — DeWayne Murray ran for 229 yards and five touchdowns as No. 5 Steel Valley (9-1) rolled to a Class AA first-round victory over No. 12 New Brighton (5-5). Murray surpassed 4,000 career yards in the victory.
Washington 52, Deer Lakes 7 — Kurt Adkins had five carries for 125 yards and two scores to propel No. 3 Washington (9-0) to the WPIAL Class AA first round win. Jordan West caught a 26-yard touchdown pass and scored on runs of 1 and 30 yards.
Avonworth 27, Beth-Center 12 — Zach Chandler threw for 164 yards and one score and rushed for another to lead No. 9 Avonworth (7-2) to a WPIAL Class A first-round win. Cole Jenkins caught eight passes for 89 yards for the Antelopes. Anthony Welsh ran for 205 yards and two scores for No. 8 Beth-Center (7-2).
Clairton 70, Carmichaels 6 — Lamont Wade rushed for 111 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries in 24 minutes as No. 1 Clairton (10-0) rolled to a Class A first-round win over No. 16 Carmichaels (5-5). Harrison Dreher scored on a 59-yard punt return, a 47-yard interception return and a 23-yard toss from Aaron Mathews.
CW North Catholic 35, Union 7 — Erick Taylor passed for 105 yards and one interception and accumulated 130 yards and two scores on the ground to help No. 2 Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic (9-0) win in its WPIAL Class A first-round matchup over No. 15 Union (5-5).
Frazier 33, South Side Beaver 32 (OT) — Frazier’s defense stopped a 2-point conversion in overtime to secure a victory over No. 13 South Side Beaver (6-4) in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs Friday night.
The fourth-seeded Commodores (10-0) were led by Hunter Patterson, who ran for 86 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 159 yards another two touchdowns.
Jeannette 27, Chartiers-Houston 7 — Swade Redman and Jefferson Jones had 94 and 93 yards rushing, respectively, to lead No. 3 Jeannette to a WPIAL Class A first-round win.
Neshannock 49, Bentworth 13 — Mason Davidson, Daniel Welker and Robert Lindsey had pick-sixes to power No. 6 Neshannock (8-1) to the WPIAL Class A first-round victory. Lindsey also scored on runs of 32 and 15 yards in the win. Frank Antuono found Tyler Sears on a 42-yard touchdown pass for the Lancers.
Shenango 23, Springdale 10 — Hunter Waskin scored a pair of touchdowns to lead No. 5 Shenango (8-2) past No. 12 Springdale (5-5 in the first round of the WPIAL Class A playoffs. Waskin rushed for 132 yards on 18 carries. Ben Sowinski rushed for 103 yards and a score for Springdale.
