High school roundup: Thomas Jefferson snaps South Park’s section win streak
Cole Lutz’s goal in the 29th minute secured Thomas Jefferson’s boys soccer a 1-0 victory over No. 1 South Park (9-1, 6-1) in Section 1-AA on Monday afternoon and ended the Eagles’ streak of 47 straight section victories.
South Park’s last section loss was against Southmoreland on Sept. 27, 2011.
Colin Bucsoc earned his fifth shutout for Thomas Jefferson (10-1, 6-1), which beat South Park for the first time since 2008.
Baldwin 1, Ringgold 0 — Luke Picchi had the game-winning goal for Baldwin (4-5-1, 2-3-1) as it edged Ringgold (6-3, 6-0) in a nonsection matchup. Goalkeeper Jackson Brandywine had the shutout.
Bishop Canevin 4, Brentwood 0 — Josh Pashal had two goals to lead Class A No. 2 Bishop Canevin (6-3, 5-2) to a victory over Brentwood (1-7, 1-6) in Section 3. Goalkeeper Garrett Burner had the shutout for the Crusaders.
Peters Township 2, Upper St. Clair 1 — Bree Latsko and Regan LaVigna scored to help No. 5 Peters Township (8-1) edge No. 1 Upper St. Clair (7-1) in a nonsection matchup between Class AAA contenders.
Pine-Richland 3, North Hills 0 — Kate Cochran, Caroline Swan and Kaitlin McGuire scored for the Rams (6-0-1, 5-0) as they defeated North Hills (2-6, 1-4) in Section 2-AAA. Goalkeeper Ingrida Ivaska had her seventh shutout for Pine-Richland.
Fox Chapel 1, Kiski Area 0 — Dixon Veltri scored in the first half and goalkeeper Kate Feczko recorded her seventh shutout to keep Fox Chapel (9-1, 8-0) undefeated in Section 3-AAA.
Canon-McMillan 18, Trinity 0 — In Section 4-AAA, Sabrina Bryan and Allison Thomas scored three goals each to lead No. 2 Canon-McMillan (9-0, 7-0) to victory.
Mars 8, Valley 1 — Tori Kopchak scored six goals to lead No. 1 Mars (8-1, 6-0) to a Section 2-AA win.
Quaker Valley 2, Beaver 0 — Freshman Grace Wirth and Moriah Wigley scored as Quaker Valley (5-3, 3-3) toppled Beaver (3-4, 2-2) in a Section 3-AA matchup. Goalkeeper Maggie Dobbins had eight saves to preserve the shutout.
Blackhawk 2, Hopewell 1 — Alondra Gonzalez had the game-winning goal for Blackhawk (4-3, 1-3) as it squeaked by Hopewell (2-4-2, 1-3-2) in a Section 5-AA tilt.
South Fayette 4, West Mifflin 0 — Natalie Caraway secured her seventh shutout as No. 3 South Fayette (8-2, 8-0) won in Section 5-AA.
Chartiers-Houston 9, Monessen 1 — Alyson Ferrari had four goals and two assists to lead Chartiers-Houston (5-6, 4-3) to a Section 2-A win. Erin James added two goals and two assists for the Bucs.
Upper St. Clair’s Jack O’Leary shot 3-under-par 69 at Butler’s Golf Course to earn medalist honors at the WPIAL Class AAA boys golf qualifier. The top 18 finishers, including five Peters Township golfers, advanced to the WPIAL championships Oct. 8 at Southpointe Golf Club.
