Speed was a factor in a one-vehicle crash Thursday in North Union that killed a Uniontown man, state police said.

The wreck occurred about 5:50 p.m. as John B. Thompson III, no age given, was traveling north on Route 51 in a 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo at a high rate of speed in the area of Northpointe Plaza, police said.

Police said Thompson encountered a vehicle turning left onto Route 51 from Race Street.

Thompson crossed over the double yellow center line, passed the vehicle and continued north in the southbound lane when he approached another vehicle traveling south on Route 51, police said.

When Thompson attempted to swerve right into the northbound lane, he lost control of his vehicle, police said. Thompson's vehicle then skidded up an embankment on the west berm of Route 51 and hit a stone wall in front of 277 Pittsburgh St., police said.

Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Deputy Coroner Roger Victor.

An investigation will continue.
