Highlands boys soccer players accused of duct-taping autistic teammate to goalpost

Highlands School District and the Harrison Police Department are investigating a reported hazing incident of an autistic Highlands boys soccer player by two of his teammates.

Harrison police Patrolman Chris Cottone said two 17-year-olds are accused of duct-taping 16-year-old sophomore Austin Babinsack to a soccer goalpost at the high school soccer field at around 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Cottone said police reviewed video surveillance footage that showed the boy was left there for 22 minutes until two passersby from nearby California Avenue heard his screams, came to his aid and called police.

Officers responded and contacted the boy's family; Cottone said he did not require medical treatment.

While police were there, the two senior teammates returned with another 16-year-old teammate. Police believe the older players also were going to wrap him with duct tape.

Cottone said police still are investigating, but he anticipated juvenile charges would be filed soon against the two 17-year-olds, whom he declined to name due to their age.

Kristie Babinsack, Austin's mother, said an off-duty Pennsylvania State Police officer called her Sunday night about the incident and said her son was “bawling” and “shaking.”

“Austin doesn't understand this,” Babinsack said. “It could be months before he processes this.”

Highlands School District said in a statement it was investigating the reported incident in conjunction with the Harrison Police Department.

“Highlands School District does not take matters such as hazing or bullying lightly,” the statement said. “The district issues strict disciplinary action on students who think these actions are appropriate or harmless.”

Highlands did not comment on potential discipline.

“I want the kids expelled and the coaches fired,” said Babinsack, who added she was satisfied with the way the district was handling the situation. “I'm most disappointed in the coaches and the parents,” she said.
