Highlands knocks off Latrobe

Highlands' boys basketball team found its shooting touch from behind the 3-point arc and pulled an upset in the first round of the Indiana Holiday Tournament.

The Golden Rams connected on 13 3-pointers and got double-doubles from three different players in an 85-72 victory over Latrobe, which came into the game ranked No. 5 in Class AAAA by Tribune-Review News Service.

Reuben King led all scorers with 26 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, Jeff Sinclair had 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Mike Trenski had 20 points and 10 assists for the Golden Rams (4-4).

Micah Mason scored 10 points, and Damon Porter added 12 assists.

"I think we needed a game like this to come together as a team," Highlands coach Rich Falter said. "We can be a really good basketball team when we play like we did tonight."

King and Sinclair each hit four 3-pointers.

"Tonight we shared the ball, and when we do that we look good," Falter said.

Kiski Area 72, Penn-Trafford 63 : Kiski Area spread out the scoring with four players in double figures to win the third-place game of the Shady Side Academy Tournament over Penn-Trafford. Brady Pacific led the Cavaliers (7-3) with 15 points. Mike Brown notched a game-high 22 points for Penn-Trafford (5-5).

Burrell 57, Riverside 45 : Four Burrell players scored in double figures — Brandon Schaber (18 points), Steve Betza (14), Brandon Nichols (11) and Dave Yakopec (10) -- as the Bucs (4-6) defeated Riverside (5-6) in the seventh-place game of the Shady Side Academy Tournament.

Steve Betza scored 14 points and was named to the all-tournament team.

Jeannette 58, Knoch 47 : Moziah Harris scored a game-high 17 points to lead Jeannette (7-2) past Knoch (4-5) in the first round of the Butler Tournament. Michael Gallagher led Knoch with 14 points.

Shady Side Academy 41, Kittanning 35 : Jerome Barnes scored a game-high 22 points, as Shady Side (6-5) slipped by Kittanning (4-6) in the fifth-place game at the Shady Side Tournament. Kittanning's Dylan Klingensmith scored a team-high 10 points. Kittanning led, 22-16, at halftime and 29-27 after three quarters.

Center 59, Valley 52 : In the C.J. Betters Tournament, Center outscored Valley, 21-6, in the fourth quarter to defeat the Vikings (6-3), ranked No. 4 in Class AAA.

Denzel Carter led Valley with 19 points and Troy Hill had 12.

Girls basketball

Riverview 53, Valley 44 (OT) : Valley (1-9) missed two foul shots for the win at the end of regulation, and Riverview (3-5) took advantage in overtime in a first-round game at the Riverview Tournament. Riverview outscored Valley, 14-5, in the extra period. Kim Tyborowski led Riverview with 18 points. For the third consecutive year, Riverview will play Southmoreland in the championship game, and the Raiders are seeking their first win.

Saltsburg 57, Apollo-Ridge 54 : Whitney Shearer scored a game-high 20 points and was named tournament Most Valuable Player after leading Saltsburg past Apollo-Ridge (8-2) in the championship game of the Apollo-Ridge Tournament. Hannah Shaffer netted 19 points for Apollo-Ridge.

Fox Chapel 66, Canon-McMillan 32 : Heidi Goeller scored 19 points for Fox Chapel (6-1), which defeated Canon-McMillan (1-8) in the first round of the Ambridge Tournament. Jenny Papich added 12 points for Fox Chapel, which had 11 players score at least two points.

Knoch 57, Penns Manor 35 : Laura Gray scored 14 points, and Sara Montgomery added 12 points, as Knoch (6-4) cruised by Penns Manor in the first round of the Penns Manor Tournament. Also for Knoch, Haley Hutterer had six assists.

Bieranowski makes all-state team

Freeport 5-foot-10 junior outside hitter Carlie Bieranowski on Monday was named to the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association Class AA All-State team.

She was one of the top servers in the WPIAL last season. She also made the All-Section 6-AA team.
