Highlands School Board, as expected, Monday approved the recall of 27 teachers who received furlough notices in May.

A total of 49 teachers received furlough notices but district officials said that more notices were sent out than the actual number of teachers who would lose their jobs.

That was done to make sure the district achieved enough savings to cover its $5 million budget shortfall and still comply with the teachers contract that required advance notice of furloughs.

Superintendent Joseph Latess initially projected that 32 teachers would be furloughed.

However, the retention of full-day kindergarten salvaged an additional six teaching positions and another four came about due to retirements and changes in programs, he said.

The teachers who were approved for recall are:

Elementary: Amy Yeckel, Julie Wolfe, Rachel Crowell, Lisa Pinzok, Jessica Jenson, Ian Miller, Mark Duncan, Allison Krenzer, Jennifer Thomas;, Jennifer Koprivnikar, Emily DiMascio; and Renee Kuhns.

Middle/High School: Jennifer Arnold, Jessica Faisch, Courtney Markiewicz, Ryan Wilpula, Mary Ann Zimmerly and Nicholas Polcha.

Listed as "LS": Amanda Coulter, John Milburn, Kelley Ziolkowski, Lindsay Woods, Melissa Klug, Bridget Seery, Antoinette Woods , Kristen Gettens and Kristy Stawinski.
