Highlands students will get guidelines on prom attire

The Highlands School Board will not set a dress code for the prom and Homecoming, but administrators and board members will address students as to what's appropriate for students to wear.

The plan is to address students and send home a packet with them indicating what's appropriate.

Board member Debbie Beale said January is the best time to let students know what is deemed appropriate for the prom, and at the beginning of the school year for homecoming.

"It helps a lot that you let it be known to the students well ahead of time," Beale said.

In other business:

The high school gym floor will be replaced.

District Business Manager Jon Rupert said the insurance company will pay for the project, which will cost about $150,000.

The district will have to pay the deductible, which will be between $1,000 and $2,500.

The floor needs replaced because of a boiler that froze in January that damaged the floor, Rupert said.

He said three quotes indicated that the entire floor will need to be replaced.

  • The board will consider giving money to the Heights Elementary PTO to help extend a fence.

Heights PTO members have raised $1,100, and plan to have another fund-raiser. PTO officials are asking the district to kick in about $1,600 in order to match what the PTO will pay.

The fence will be installed around the field near Carlisle Street, where there is currently no fencing.

Board President Karen Wantland said she believes it's important for the district to help because it's a safety issue.

  • The district's contribution to the Allegheny Intermediate Unit will not change this year. It will pay $22,308 of the Intermediate Unit's $3.3 million budget.
