Canada's largest music chain, HMV, has pulled Alanis Morissette's records to protest her giving Starbucks a six-week exclusive to hawk her new CD.

At issue is the Ottawa native's deal with Seattle-based Starbucks Coffee Co. and its successful Hear Music unit to sell her acoustic, 10th anniversary edition of "Jagged Little Pill" exclusively for six weeks.

Humphrey Kadaner, chief executive officer of British-based HMV, said in an e-mail to Canadian outlets that HMV was returning all of Morissette's music to her record company, Maverick Records, "consistent with the views of the majority of our customers," E! Online reported.

"My intention certainly was not to ruffle feathers in that department although it's inevitable obviously," Morissette told the Boston Herald.

"When people walk into Starbucks ... there's a real openness and a focus to behold and take in whatever may be on that counter, and I think this record is a special record," Morissette said.
