Contractors who perform more than $5,000 a year in home improvements must register with the state Attorney General's Office by July 1.

Attorney General Tom Corbett said Monday that the intent of the Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act, which was passed by the Legislature last year, is to protect consumers from unscrupulous contractors and authorize penalties for home improvement fraud.

Contractors can register online or by submitting an application — which is available at 1-800-441-2555 — to Home Improvement Contractor Registration, c/o Bureau of Consumer Protection, 15th Floor, Strawberry Square, Harrisburg, PA 17120.
