Homestead is planning a community garden at the corner of E. Seventh Avenue and Amity Street.
Gardening experts from Grow Pittsburgh will at Propel Homestead's cafeteria on Thursday at 6 p.m. to show residents how to make raised beds to grow food.
Organizers said they welcome suggestions and participation.
“We need your input,” organizer Sharon Ford said on Thursday night. “We need to know what you want us to plant.”
She said the groundbreaking will be April 28.
Ford said the idea for the came out of town hall meetings that began last year.
Homestead police Chief Jeff DeSimone told borough council on Thursday that a resident told police that someone wearing a indeterminate uniform and claiming to be collecting for the Fraternal Order of Police came to her mother's door.
DeSimone said that neither his department nor the FOP solicit donations door-to-door.
“I checked with the FOP personally,” the chief said. “They do not do that. They do a solicitation fund drive over the phone. That's it.”
He said residents should call police if they encounter the solicitor.
DeSimone said the borough needs crossing guards and alternates.

Council hired Milton Williams as a part-time laborer in the Public Works Department.
“I know he'll be beneficial to the borough in an effort to maintain a safe environment for our residents,” Councilwoman Wanda Burwell said.
Council also:
⢠Accepted the resignation of Dan Primm from the parking department.
⢠Authorized advertising for proposals for garbage collection and disposal.
⢠Accepted the Vactor contract for sewer cleaning with Turtle Creek Valley Council of Governments from April 1 to Nov. 15 for $1,154 per day.
⢠Accepted a street sweeping contract with Steel Valley Council of Governments from April 1 to Oct. 25 at $7.50 per hour.
