A Brighton Heights family fled their home after flames swept through a second-floor bedroom yesterday, fire officials said.

The fire started about 5:30 p.m. in the 3300 block of Fleming Avenue. Responding firefighters found flames shooting out the second-floor windows, Battalion Chief Bill Martin said.

The fire was limited to the second floor, but the house sustained $15,000 to $20,000 in damages, and the family cannot stay there, Martin said. The American Red Cross arranged for lodging.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. City public works employees spread salt on the street after the fire because temperatures were in the 20s, and water from the hoses was beginning to freeze.
