The Pirates beat the New York Yankees, 4-2, Thursday at PNC Park behind eight strong innings by Paul Maholm.

Pirates third inning (Mike Mussina pitching)

Jack Wilson doubled to center field. Nate McLouth grounded to first, Wilson to third. Freddy Sanchez singled to left, Wilson scored.

Pirates 1, Yankees 0


Pirates fifth inning

Wilson singled to center. McLouth safe on a fielder's choice, Wilson out at second. McLouth stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error. Sanchez sacrifice fly to center, McLouth scored.

Yankees seventh inning (Paul Maholm pitching)

Justin Christian singled to center with two outs. Pinch-hitter Wilson Betemit singled to right, Christian to second. Derek Jeter was hit by a pitch, Christian to third and Betemit to second. Bobby Abreu singled to right, Christian and Betemit scored, Jeter to second.
