The small community of Hunker borough will celebrate a big anniversary this year.

Fireworks, games, music and more will highlight the 75th anniversary in the center of town on Saturday.

Hunker made it's mark on the map after feed mill owner Frederick Hunker donated ground for the Pennsylvania Railroad right of way. When completed, the station and newly constructed post office were named in honor of him. The stop along the route became known as Hunker Station. As industry and civilization grew up around the station, the town was later known as Hunker.

Mayor Patricia Ann Brigode said the town currently has a population of about 328 people, allowing it to remain a quaint town perfect for raising a family.

"We are often referred to by visitors as just like visiting Mayberry like on "The Andy Griffith Show," Brigode said. "The borough in years past had a few small stores and a barbershop. Currently we have a meat market. We have a post office standing on its own and not operated out of someone's house."

She said the town is typical of other small communities with a volunteer fire department that relies of sub sales to stay afloat and a strawberry festival each year.

"It is a friendly little community where residents watch out for their neighbors," Brigode said. "It's just a great little town."
