Freedom can be a two-edged sword, it seems. To speak against is liberty; to be spoken against is tyranny and racial injustice. Such is the result of the disproportionate criticism of Conflict Kitchen’s recent protest of Israeli actions toward the Palestinian people. For B’nai B’rith, an organization that characterizes itself as a champion of human rights, tolerance and diversity, its recent campaign against Conflict Kitchen’s right to expression casts a very large, dark shadow on its true nature.

Why did B’nai B’rith wait over a year to speak out against Conflict Kitchen’s endowment? Is it just a coincidence that B’nai B’rith’s protests come as Conflict Kitchen is protesting Israeli actions? And now, the coup de grace — death threats targeting Conflict Kitchen that forced a temporary shutdown of its operations ( “Conflict Kitchen to reopen; death threat investigation continues” ).

This is not the same Jewish people who welcomed me into their fold and made me feel at home, who taught me so much about tolerance and human dignity, who showed me how to grow within. If things keep going in the direction they are, if voices in the Jewish community do not speak out against this type of hypocrisy, it is only a matter of time before the Jewish people occupy Israel in body only, while their spiritual beings are, once again, lost in the wilderness.
