Carl J. Johnson will retire from day-to-day operations at optics maker II-VI Inc., the company he founded in 1971, as of May 31.

CEO Francis J. Kramer said the move continues a management succession plan begun in May 2007. Saxonburg, Butler County-based II-VI had revenue of more than $292 million for the fiscal year that ended June 30 and has more than 6,000 employees.

Johnson will continue as chairman of the board. Johnson and the late James E. Hawkey co-founded the company to make infrared optical materials. II-VI went public in 1987, and its customers include industrial manufacturers and military, aerospace, electronics and telecommunications businesses.
