India's government and opposition parties have united on the decision to install a tsunami warning system along the nation's coasts.
Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee made the announcement Sunday after a three-hour all-party meeting in the capital, New Delhi, Asian News International reported Monday.
"An early warning system should be evolved, and the government has readily agreed to this suggestion. Both the prime minister and the home minister, Shivraj Patel, said that a committee has been appointed to look for the best technology that could be made available."
A national disaster management authority, to be set up by an act of Parliament, would become part of an international tsunami warning system.
Mukherjee also said that India still does not need aid from other countries. But this does not include agencies such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, he said.
