Indiana girls recover from shaky start
Laurel Valley 62, Purchase Line 51–Heidi Hollingsworth scored a game-high 26 points, and Deanna Solich had a double-double with 10 points and 22 rebounds as Laurel Valley topped Purchase Line in a Heritage Conference game Jan. 6.
Laurel Valley 62, Purchase Line 51–In a game Jan. 6, Laurel Valley held an 18-point lead, 24-6, after the first quarter but trailed 30-29 entering halftime. The Rams took control with a 19-7 run in the third quarter and held on the rest of the way.
Hollingsworth poured in 26 points and grabbed six steals. Brittany Hall added 11 points and dished out six assists. Grace Altimus and Deanna Solich added 10 points apiece, and Solich finished with 22 rebounds.
Kayla Rorabaugh paced the Red Dragons with 23 points and five steals.
Belle Vernon 58, Derry 51–Derry Area lost two starters-Sunie McCallen and Shelby Kozar-to fouls early in the fourth quarter as Belle Vernon Area went on to a 58-51 victory Jan. 6.
After falling behind by six at the end of the first quarter (16-10), the Lady Trojans climbed to within 41-40 heading into the fourth. But they then went cold from the floor and had those two starters fouled out.
Belle Vernon (2-4, 5-7), meanwhile, got strong inside play from Ava Nickens, who finished with a game-high 23 points.
For DA, Cassie Hauser netted 16 points, and McCallen 11.
Marion Center 52, United 48–Marion Center was without two key players, Brittany Fairman and Heather Abbey, but Alicia Glasser picked up the slack as the Stingers pulled out a 52-48 overtime victory over United Jan. 6.
Glasser scored 20 of her game-high 24 points after intermission as Marion Center forced the extra period. The Stingers trailed 33-29 after three quarters before tying the score, 45-45, at the end of regulation.
Glasser made 12 of 21 free throws, including a 10-for-16 second-half performance.
Jessica Bloom led United with 13 points and 10 steals.
Jamie Henry had 12 points, and Courtney Coleman had eight rebounds.
Blairsville 45, Ligonier Valley 22–Blairsville scored its first two wins of the season, with the first coming at the expense of Ligonier Valley, which is still looking for its first win of the season.
Blairsville (1-12 overall, 1-7 conference) jumped out to an 18-4 lead after eight minutes.
Blairsville’s Ada Henigin led all scorers with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Colleen Wodowski added 12 points. Morgan Keller had seven points, eight rebounds and six assists.
Blairsville 54, Elderton 24–The Bobcat girls followed up by trouncing Elderton, which has one win this season.
Blairsville led by 18 points, 22-4 at the end of the first quarter.
Marion Center 66, Blairsville 26–But the modest win streak came to an end Wednesday.
Missy Loughry scored 17 points as Marion Center (11-3, 9-0) defeated Blairsville (2-11, 1-9) in a Heritage Conference game.
Henigin had a double-double, with 12 points and 17 rebounds, for Blairsville in the loss.
Indiana Area’s girls basketball team held off a surprisingly stubborn Derry Area squad Monday night to keep its section record unblemished in seven starts, 53-47 in overtime. Indiana got off to a horrible start, losing the first quarter 15-3, but had the game even by the end of three quarters.
Derry fell to 8-6 overall, 4-3 in the section; Indiana is 13-2.
