Mead Johnson Nutritionals has recalled certain 24-ounce cans of GENTLEASE powdered infant formula because they reportedly contain small metal particles.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced the recall by the company, a unit of Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. The affected cans have the lot number BMJ19, and are stamped use by 1 Jul 07, Marketwatch said.
The FDA said 41,464 cans of the formula were distributed beginning Dec. 16, 2005 through retail stores across the country. No illnesses have been reported, but the FDA warned if an infant were to inhale the formula into the lungs, it could pose a serious risk to the infant's respiratory system and throat.
The FDA said it and Mead Johnson are trying to determine how the metal particles got into the infant formula.
