An inmate at the state prison along Woods Run on the North Side took his own life on Friday, a spokeswoman for the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Jumaul Williams, 42, was found hanging from a bedsheet in his cell at 6:10 a.m., the spokeswoman said. Williams was pronounced dead at the scene.

State records show he was a Pittsburgh resident who was sentenced in 2005 by Allegheny County Common Pleas Court Judge Donna Joe McDaniel to serve eight to 20 years in prison for aggravated assault. They also show that he had been in and out of prison prior to that for convictions on charges such as theft, receiving stolen property, robbery, burglary and reckless endangerment.
