FREEPORT: Salsgiver, a local Internet service provider, has moved its operations from Buffalo Township to a building at High and Fifth streets in the borough. The corporation's 10 employees moved into the 10,000-square-foot building in Freeport about two months ago. 'This is where our customer base is, so it was a good idea to move here,' said Kirk Howard, manager of technical support. 'When we were in Sarver, we had two buildings. One housed the equipment and the other housed personnel,' said Steve Vargo, Salsgiver's Web master and Web designer. 'Now everything is centrally located with employees and equipment in one place. Training and monitoring can be hands on,' Vargo said. The company recently hired employees for technical support positions for the move to Freeport and plans to add more employees as the company expands, co-owner Loren Salsgiver said. 'We currently have some sales positions open,' he said. Husband and wife, Loren and Lisa Salsgiver, started the business in December 1995. 'We had the Internet through a local provider. It was so frustrating. We thought, 'We can do this better,' ' Lisa Salsgiver said. 'This is actually an exciting time for us,' she said. 'We've gotten to the point of adding more exchange numbers.' The company is offering wireless technology to customers, an addition they have planned for about a year, Lisa Salsgiver said. Wireless is high-speed broadband access. It uses radio waves instead of telephone or cable lines to connect to the Internet. Wireless services are available in Freeport and will be available in Harrison within 30 days, she said. The wireless service for residential customers is $200 for one-time setup followed by $40 per month. 'We've expanded our regular dial-up service,' Howard said. 'Previously, we covered the Alle-Kiski Valley using Freeport and Oakmont access numbers. Now we cover a majority of 724 and 412 area codes,' he said. 'We have over 33 exchange numbers now,' Lisa Salsgiver said. Access numbers in local phone exchanges are used for modem connections. More broadband dial-up service also is available, which provides a faster Internet connection. Dial-up service is $20 per month with no set-up or cancellation fee. Salsgiver also provides computer repair and upgrades for customers as a courtesy. It includes performing virus scans and removals, file backup and reinstallation of Windows, Vargo said. 'We plan to expand on our co-location service,' Loren Salsgiver said. 'We basically lease our server to companies. Then they don't have to have a full-time staff to monitor the computers and invest in a high-speed connection.' The company also is considering holding classes for the public on computer basics. Salsgiver wants to be involved in the community. One of its contributions is offering its services to Allegheny-Kiski Senior Net, a program in which senior citizens volunteer to help other senior citizens learn new technologies. Local organizations also can place announcements on a community page.
