Violence claimed the lives of 10 people, including policemen and national guards, in separate incidents east of Baghdad Monday.

One incident occurred near the city of Baaqouba, 60 kilometers (37 miles) east of Baghdad, when gunmen attacked with automatic rifles and rocket propelled grenades a checkpoint manned by Iraqi national guards.

Witnesses said the policemen called in help following a fierce gun battle.

In the second incident, a car bomb exploded inside Baaqouba as policemen were evacuating casualties from the first incident to a local hospital.

At least 10 people were killed and 15 others were wounded in the two attacks, according to initial reports.

Also Monday, a roadside bomb exploded on the highway in Baghdad's Dora neighborhood, targeting an Iraqi police patrol. There was no immediate word on casualties.
