It ain't easy being green at Oakmont
“It takes us about four hours to play 18 holes of golf, and there's a mandatory walking rule here unless you have a medical excuse,” said Patty Kegel at the Oakmont Country Club on Tuesday. “A few of the ladies had to come back inside.”
One hundred members of the Women's Golf Association of Western PA battled 90-degree temps and oppressive humidity during a week-long tourney at the storied club.
At the 90th anniversary dinner on Tuesday evening were the likes of Mitzi Hofmann, Sue McMurdy, Suzy Broadhurst, Marcia Balmert, Annie Vanzant, Heidi Fuhrer, Nancy Zupancic, Carol Onufro, head golf professionalBob Ford and hall of famer Carol Semple Thompson, who was going for her 14th championship.
“I wish I knew!” she laughed, when asked what her secret was. “I had great teachers growing up, and my parents were great players.”
The roster of 600 amateur golfers requires a 19.4 handicap to gain entree to the club, but “Once you're in, you're in forever,” said prexyMary Mackey.
