IUP students finish internships

Jennifer Fuchs and Nathan Shively , students at Hempfield Area High School, and Quindelyn Cook , a student at Greensburg Salem High School, attended the Pennsylvania Governor's School for Health Care this summer. Of the 400 applications received from high school juniors, 110 students were selected. The participants attend a five-week scholarship program. The school is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the University of Pittsburgh and The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Brenna L. Dykta , daughter of Joseph and Sandra Dykta of North Huntingdon Township, has been named an Alden Scholar at Allegheny College in Meadville, where she is a senior communication arts major. A graduate of Norwin High School, Dykta maintained a 3.2 grade point average or higher during the preceding academic year. The awards are named in honor of the Rev. Timothy Alden Jr., who founded the college in 1815.

Charles Fazzi, of Aliquippa, has joined the faculty of St. Vincent College as a professor of accounting and as director of the Master's Degree in Accountancy program in the Alex G. McKenna School of Business, Economics and Government. Fazzi earned a bachelor's degree at Penn State University, where he also earned a master's of business administration and a doctorate in accounting.

Henry De Young, Joanna Kochaniak , Kran Malhotra , Riddhi Pakrasi and Joy Wang of Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville have been named as semifinalists in the 48th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. They now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,000 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $30 million, that will be offered next spring.

Jenelle Ashworth has accepted the position of educational events director for The National Educational Center for Women in Business located at Seton Hill University in Greensburg. Ashworth will coordinate the strategic planning of all educational workshops, seminars and special events, including The Center's annual women-focused small business conference. As director, Ashworth will also implement Women and Co., a series of networking events for women held at businesses owned by women in Allegheny, Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland counties. She previously worked for the United Jewish Federation in Pittsburgh.

Dawn Brown , associate program coordinator of the Laurel Mountains Region of the Alzheimer's Association, in Greensburg, joined advocates in Harrisburg to raise awareness of the impact Alzheimer's disease may have on the state budget in the coming years. As Pennsylvanians age, and with increasing longevity, Alzheimer's disease may reach new heights. Advocates represented the Pennsylvania Public Policy Coalition of the Alzheimer's Association's Delaware Valley and Greater Pennsylvania Chapters.

Jenn Stuchal , of Greensburg, received a $1,000 Chick-fil-A Leadership Scholarship in recognition of her commitment to personal and professional excellence. A 2000 graduate of Hempfield Area High School, Stuchal is a student at California University of Pennsylvania and an employee at the Westmoreland Mall Chick-fil-A restaurant.

Joseph Artuso , of Greensburg; Ian Laverty , of New Derry; and Jonathan Pipes , of Greensburg, were inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars at Robert Morris University. Freshman or sophmore students who earn a 3.4 GPA or higher are eligible to join the society. Society members are regularly involved with various community service projects and charitable missions.

These seventh-and eighth-grade students from the Penn-Trafford School District have qualified for the Johns Hopkins Talent Search 2003. Qualified students must score at the 97th percentile or above on a standardized test and are than eligible to take the SAT.

District Justice Mark J. Bilik , of Derry Township, and District Justice Roger F. Eckels , of Norvelt, were recently recertified for service as members of Pennsylvania's Unified Judicial System after completing a weeklong instructional program. The certification was conducted by the Minor Judiciary Education Board and the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Court and was designed to ensure district justices remain current in a variety of legal topics and management techniques.

Megan Shinn , of Jeannette, was named a Commended Student in the 2003 National Merit Scholarship Program. The senior at Greensburg Central Catholic High School, Shinn placed among the top 5 percent of more than 1 million students who took the 2001 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

Clarion University real estate students, Anthony Dwire , of Greensburg, and Jason Kreinbrook , of Lower Burrell, participated in an appraisal project to gain field experience. Dwire, a Greensburg Salem High School graduate, and Kreinbrook, a Kiski Area High School graduate, spent time researching and appraising homes. To complete their project, students performed many of the tasks of a professional appraiser.

Katie Kerr , of Greensburg, played A.A. Prelapsarinov in Clarion University's production of "Slavs!" by Tony Kushner. Kerr, a senior theater major, is a graduate of Greensburg Salem High School.

Laura Colosimo , of Greensburg, was crowned the 2002 homecoming queen at the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg. Colosimo, a 1999 Greensburg Central Catholic High School graduate, is a senior majoring in humanities with a psychology minor.

Alicia M. Barnes , of Natrona Heights, joined the administrative staff as phonathon coordinator for the annual fund in the Institutional Advancement office at St. Vincent College, Unity Township. Barnes, a 2001 St. Vincent graduate, will be supervising all phone and direct mail solicitations for the college.

Aron M. Maghsoudi , a 1998 graduate of Greater Latrobe High School, is one of the 22 new students accepted to the St. Vincent Seminary degree programs for 2002-2003. Maghsoudi earned a bachelor's degree in religious education from St. Vincent College in 2002.

Keith White , a student at Mt. Pleasant Area High School, was named a commended student in the 2003 National Merit Scholarship Program.
