BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana coach Terry Hoeppner is facing brain surgery for the second time in less than nine months, but still hopes to be back on the football field in a couple weeks. Surgeons removed a tumor from the 59-year-old's right temple in December, and Hoeppner said Tuesday that his doctors told him the day before that an MRI scan showed "some change in the area" of his brain where the first tumor had been. The MRI taken Friday showed evidence of a possible recurrent tumor, neurosurgeon Marshall Poor said. Poor said he expected Hoeppner to return in two to four weeks following surgery today in Bloomington. Basketball The Pittsburgh Xplosion named Larry Anderson head coach yesterday. Anderson was the coach at Woodland Hills High School from 2002-06. He was also the men's basketball coach at Carnegie Mellon from 1983-90, where he compiled 56 victories. He was an assistant coach at Point Park (1973-83) and Schenley (1990-93), as well as with the Pitt women's team from 1993-98. Cycling Lance Armstrong bristled yesterday at a report that two former teammates admitted using performance-enhancing drugs, calling it "a hatchet job ... to link me to doping through somebody else's admission." Frankie Andreu and another former Armstrong teammate who requested anonymity because he still works in cycling told The New York Times they used the endurance-booster EPO to prepare for the 1999 Tour de France, when Armstrong won the first of his seven titles. Neither rider has ever tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and both said they never saw Armstrong take any banned substances. Hockey Rick DiPietro re-signed with the New York Islanders yesterday, agreeing to a record 15-year deal that will pay the No. 1 goalie $67.5 million. Flyers captain Keith Primeau is expected to announce his retirement before the end of the week. The decision could help explain why the Flyers extended a $1.9 million Group II offer sheet to Vancouver's Ryan Kesler yesterday. Motor sports NASCAR suspended Kevin Grubb indefinitely yesterday because he refused to submit to a random drug test following the Busch Series race at Richmond International Speedway.
