Japan has decided to provide Japanese television programs free of charge to China Educational Television to promote greater understanding of Japan in China.

At the Japanese Embassy in Beijing, visiting Japanese Senior Vice Foreign Minister Katsutoshi Kaneda Wednesday handed over the list of 360 Japanese TV programs, including documentaries and educational shows, to Chinese Vice Education Minister Wu Qidi, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported Thursday.

Kaneda said that there is not yet sufficient mutual understanding between the Japanese and the Chinese.

Another proposal, that of a high school student exchange program, was also approved at the meeting.

China will send 1,250 senior middle school students to Japan each year and the same number of Japanese students will also visit China annually to gain a better understanding of the country.

About 1,100 of the total 1,250 Chinese students will stay in Japan for 10 days, and others will undertake yearly or half-yearly study programmes, China Daily reported.
