Japan said it will contribute $130 million to the Global Fund to Fight Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, tuberculosis and malaria. This is part of the additional contribution to the Global Fund announced in June 2005 by Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, who pledged an additional Japanese contribution amounting to $500 million in the coming years. AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria are responsible for 6 million deaths in the world every year. The number of people infected with HIV/AIDS shows a steady increase and it is estimated that 40.3 million people in the world are living with HIV/AIDS. Japan said it made the contribution to recognize the important role the Global Fund is playing in the fight against the diseases in developing countries and to express Japan's commitment to continue its assistance in the endeavor. © Copyright 2006 by United Press International
