Jeannette clicks on all cylinders in rout of Leechburg
Little seemed to slow down the Jeannette offense in Week 2.
The Class A No. 2 Jayhawks took it to host Leechburg in a 49-3 Eastern Conference victory Friday at Veterans Memorial Field.
“Whoever you play, you have to go out and try to play the best you can,” Jeannette coach Roy Hall said. “It was pretty good tonight.”
Jeannette (3-0, 1-0) got the job done often through the air and on the ground, with senior quarterback Gio Vonne Sanders leading the way.
The senior threw for 172 yards on 4 of 5 passing, for three scores, and called his own number twice for 43 yards.
“He can run. He can throw. He’s good on defense, too,” Hall said. “He’s a leader on the field, off the field and great in the classroom. As he goes, we go.”
Sanders’ favorite target was senior Ryan Swinton. The pair connected just twice in the first half, but they went for scores of 60 and 23 yards. Swinton also carried the ball twice, including a 67-yard score on Jeannette’s first offensive possession.
Senior running back Kareem Hall made his share of contributions, carrying the ball five times for 105 yards and a pair of scores.
Mike Pompei had four rushes for 51 yards and one score, and Robert Kennedy caught one pass for an 85-yard score. Kennedy also tacked on 34 yards on three carries.
“It’s nice when you have a complement of players like Sanders, Hall and Swinton, Pompei and Kennedy,” Hall said. “At any given time, when one of them touch the ball, they can break one.”
Leechburg (0-3, 0-2) had a rough go the entire night against one of the WPIAL’s top teams.
“Jeannette is a very good team. They’re definitely more athletic, with a lot more speed than we have,” Leechburg coach Mark George said. “Could we have given them a better game? Yes. We could have played a lot better.”
The lone score for the Blue Devils was a 30-yard field goal from sophomore Tanner Dudek.
Freshman Jake Blumer led Leechburg with 36 yards on 12 carries, and senior Cory Nulph had 26 yards on nine carries.
