Jeannette football team gets police escort

A reported death threat against a Greensburg Salem School District principal caused concerns Thursday that spread to neighboring school districts and resulted in some students not being allowed to leave their schools. Greensburg police Chief Walter J. "Wally" Lyons said the department received a report yesterday from a New Salem Acres woman who said she had heard two men talking over her son's walkie-talkie about weapons, middle school Principal Thomas Marshall and a "school on the hill." The woman believed the men were traveling in separate vehicles in the Greensburg area. Authorities responded by going to the middle school and contacting other principals in the school district to be on the lookout for any suspicious people or activity. "None of the Greensburg Salem schools were locked down," Lyons said. State police and neighboring school districts were told about the threat because of the vagueness of the reference to the "school on the hill" and the possibility that some other school might be involved, authorities said. Lyons said his department found the woman's statements to be credible and sincere, but police were uncertain about how much of the conversation she heard. "The only question is, did she hear all the conversation and in the proper context," Lyons said. A report made to Jeannette school officials resulted in police escorting the high school football team and band to McKee Middle School for a pep rally, said police Chief Carl Shifko. "They just wanted us to watch and escort them down to the pep rally," he said. Jeannette and Greensburg Central Catholic football teams, both of which are undefeated, will play tonight at Greensburg Central Catholic's Centurion Stadium in Hempfield Township's Carbon section.
