A Jeannette man is in Westmoreland County Prison after allegedly breaking into a city business to find a place to sleep.

Dennis Bruce Scalzitti, 20, of 707 Ellsworth Ave., was charged Tuesday by Jeannette police with burglary, criminal trespass and possessing instruments of crime. He was arraigned before Jeannette District Judge Joseph DeMarchis with bail set at $15,000.

According to the criminal complaint, police went to Hummel Brothers Electric, 359 N. First St., at about 11:15 p.m. Monday after an alarm sounded in a storage trailer.

Police said they found Scalzitti standing at the trailer door with his hand on the padlock, from which the screws to the clasp were removed.

Scalzitti told police, "You might as well arrest me now," according to the criminal complaint. He said he removed the screws from the clasp because he needed a place to sleep, but was in the trailer only about 10 minutes after deciding it was a bad idea and was leaving as police arrived. He told police he did not intend to steal anything.

Police found three screwdrivers and a hammer in Scalzitti's possession.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 4 before DeMarchis.
