Jeannette parking lot bought for landscaping business

The parking lot at Seventh Street and Magee Avenue in Jeannette has been sold to a city resident to be used as a landscape supply yard.

Council approved the purchase of the lot by Edward Barbish III for $9,000 at a special meeting Monday night. Barbish is owner of Barbish Inc. Property Maintenance Services in Jeannette. His father, Edward Barbish Jr., owns Barbish Plumbing and Heating in the city.

"We're going to run our landscaping business out of there and eventually (offer) sales of landscaping supplies and deliveries," Barbish said Tuesday. "There's going to be a small building and an outside lot where we'll have mulch, stone, gravel, decorative rock."

Barbish was the lone bidder for the property, which formerly was used as a parking lot. In recent years, it's been used for permit parking on a few occasions.

"It's a new business coming to town," said Mayor Robert Carter. "A lot that was vacant and empty is back on the tax rolls. It's a win-win for the city. It will put some beautification on that corner."

City Clerk Michael Minyon said the money will go into the city's general fund.
