Jeannette road to be permanently fixed

Work to permanently repair Old Hill Road in Jeannette is expected to begin today. Danmar Contracting, of Delmont, was awarded the work on the road, which washed out Jan. 13 and slid down a hill. An underlying hillside moved about a foot. "They're going to start digging out all the loose stuff and start recompacting the road," said Curt Elliott, city foreman. The one-way street became impassable to vehicular traffic and a state of emergency was declared by Mayor Michael Cafasso. A temporary road was put in place Jan. 14. While repairs take place, the road will be closed from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m., Elliott said. Because the road will be open during evening hours, none of the residents will have to be displaced. Residents were notified Monday that the work was to begin, Elliott said. Once the road is permanently fixed, it will remain a 16-foot road, but it will have a bit of a curve. That will keep the road away from the lower side of the hillside, moving it back on solid ground. "(The road) won't go straight; it will curve to the left," Elliott said. "It's more solid on the uphill side." The repair work is expected to take about two weeks, weather permitting.
