Flame and smoke were pouring out of a passenger airliner at Toronto's Pearson International Airport Tuesday afternoon, CBC News reported.

The report came two hours after planes at the airport were grounded because of severe thunderstorms, CBC said.

The network said there is no word on how many passengers were on board the Air France A340, or their condition. The A340 can seat between 250 and 305 passengers, with a crew of 12 to 15 people.

CBC said there were reports that the airplane was trying to take off or land in a downpour when it skidded off a runway at about 3:50 p.m.

The aircraft crashed through barriers and ended up in a small ravine at the far west end of the airport, the fuselage tipped down and the aircraft's tail in the air, CBC said.

Rescue crews are on the scene.
